At Ability Action, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to participate fully in the workforce—regardless of disability or long-term medical condition. Our mission is clear: to support individuals in overcoming barriers to employment and to help create workplaces that reflect the diversity of our communities.
We work hand in hand with people living with disability or long-term medical conditions, helping them gain the skills, confidence, and readiness to re-enter the workforce. For those who have been unemployed long term, we provide tailored support to find not just a job—but the right job, in the right place.
Just as importantly, we partner with local employers to build inclusive, diverse, and empowered teams. We applaud the businesses that have already embraced this vision and opened their doors to talented individuals who bring unique strengths and perspectives.
We’re proud of the progress we’ve made together—and we’re just getting started.

On 2nd May 2025, Ability Action CIC launched its major community engagement initiative at Woodbridge Medical Centre, Jubilee Gardens, Southall. The event brought together a diverse group, including NHS professionals, GPs, local entrepreneurs, and community members, highlighting a shared commitment to health equality, disability awareness, and community healing.
The afternoon began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, symbolizing hope, unity, and a new beginning. Attendees joined in reflecting on the impact of civil war trauma, long-term disability, mental health struggles, and the need for culturally sensitive medical support in the area.
Participants—especially those from vulnerable groups—spoke openly about their challenges. Issues like long-term unemployment, mental health stigma, and lack of access to disability-friendly services were brought forward. Ability Action CIC was praised as the first social organization in the area to directly address these gaps.
The event wasn’t just symbolic—it was practical. Ability Action’s team offered direct advice and resources, helping attendees explore employment and self-employment opportunities, particularly for those living with disabilities or long-term medical conditions. This marks a shift from passive support to active empowerment in the community.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the "Heart of the Community Award" to Dr. Arun Thiruvengadam, a GP recognized for his outstanding work in equality, diversity, and inclusive healthcare. The award, presented on behalf of the local community, acknowledged his long-standing service and commitment to underserved populations.
With over 50 attendees, the event signaled strong local interest in building a more inclusive, aware, and health-oriented community. Inspired by Ability Action’s leadership, several attendees living with disabilities expressed willingness to take steps toward employment and business development, knowing support is now accessible.
At Ability Action CIC, we are deeply committed to creating an inclusive society where every voice is heard — including those who sign. One of the most overlooked and under-supported groups in the UK are Deaf and hard-of-hearing immigrants who use foreign sign languages, particularly those from conflict-affected regions such as Sri Lanka.
Over the past several decades, many Sri Lankan individuals and families migrated to the UK — often as a result of the long and devastating civil war. During the conflict, many people experienced trauma, injury, and displacement, which led to life-altering disabilities, including hearing loss.
Some of these individuals have now been in the UK for 20 to 30 years, yet continue to face significant language and accessibility barriers — not just in spoken English, but in sign language.
❗Sign languages are not universal.
Sri Lankan Sign Language (SLSL) is completely different from British Sign Language (BSL). As a result, many Deaf Sri Lankan immigrants are cut off from essential services, healthcare, and community life because interpreters in their native sign language are almost impossible to find.
Ability Action CIC works at the intersection of language access, disability inclusion, and community empowerment. We:
One of the biggest barriers is the lack of qualified interpreters in rare or non-UK sign languages. That's why we launched our Community Sign Language Empowerment Project — a unique initiative that:
💬 For example, a young woman from a Sri Lankan family who grew up in the UK learned both BSL and SLSL to communicate with her parents. Through our program, she now works part-time supporting Deaf Sri Lankan elders at GP appointments and helps them access community events. She’s now pursuing interpreter training — turning her lived experience into a professional pathway.
This is more than just support — it's about belonging, dignity, and economic empowerment.
When we help someone access their GP, fill out a housing form, or apply for benefits in a language they truly understand, we’re doing more than just translation — we’re breaking cycles of isolation and creating opportunities for independence and inclusion.
And when we train individuals from these communities to become support workers themselves, we’re helping to build leadership, representation, and generational progress.
